There seem to be a lot emotional reviews over hypothetical concerns about the chemical in this product. I realize that the collar works because it is made with an insecticide. Obviously, we shouldn’t be eating insecticides or letting our kids chew on the collar. I am not convinced that this collar is horribly toxic for what its used for. My dog certainly does not seem to have any ill effects from the collar. I simply wash my hands after touching it.

Hartz has one of the worst safety records in the industry. Their products contain the pesticide neurotoxin phenothrin and have accounted for a significant number of adverse incidents reported to the EPA. I learned this the hard way when our pet died as a result of the application of their flea and tick product. This was confirmed by our veterinarian, who incidated that she sees these incidents regularly and cannot believe these products are allowed in the marketplace. Please be careful–the safety record of these products is simply appalling. Please speak with your veterinarian. Don’t try to save a buck and end up spending hundreds in an attempt to save your dog–or worse, lose your loved one.

PRATICALLY USELESS ON LITTLE DOGS – Vincent Rodriguez – Space City TX USA
During winter i bathe my little 15lb chihuahuas with little more than human shampoo and water and this kills what little fleas they get… and we walk over a mile a day around the neighborhood filled with dogs. BUT, when spring comes, so do the fleas. Since the fleas were multiplying, about a dozen or so per dog, I decided to use this product since I bought it at my local grocer; it’s all they had. So it killed the fleas faster than regular shampoo and saved me 5 min. per pet… and that was it! Within a few days the fleas were back; not many, just a few, but that’s normal for my dogs. THIS PRODUCT IS USELESS FOR FLEAS! Oh, BTW, since i started using garlic in my dogs food a few years ago, the flea population around here is manageable without insecticides; before the infestation would make me run for the hills. I hate using chemicals on my pets, so I only bathe them once a month, the few fleas they do get bother them, but not much, they sure don’t bother me. I don’t trust chemical companies with my pets… thinking of using essential oils. Oh, BTW, you’re gonna love this piece of advice, a few years back when our new addition, a stray, came into our lives, i kept him in the garage until i could be sure he was safe while i searched for his master. I did wind up keeping him. I got him during winter. I don’t frequent the garage. By spring, I swear there was over 1,000 fleas infesting the garage. I searched the net for a green way to kill fleas and it worked. I used a shallow serving tray filled with tap water and a few drops of liquid dish soap; put it on the ground with a low wattage light hovering above the tray. I swear the tray was filled with dead fleas the next day. I did this for an entire week, there were that many fleas, until they were all gone; move the tray around because the fleas are territorial; go figure.
Dangerous Product for Cats – Fiberholic – Cincinnati, OH
We used this product on our two cats after we discovered fleas on them. Within an hour, both cats were vomiting and drooling due to pyrethroid poisoning. Hartz Ultraguard Flea and Tick Dip for Dogs and Cats contains Pyrethrin, which is derived from Chrysanthemums. Interestingly, Chrysanthemums are toxic to cats.
If we had not washed our cats to remove the dip from their skin and coats, they most likely would not have survived the night without emergency veterinary care.
Please research before using this product, or any other Hartz product. Hartz products have a record of being dangerous for cats, and the company seems to not be concerned about the scores of animals that have been injured or killed after their products were used.
Be aware, there are even websites started by consumers who consider their pets to be victims of poisoning after using Hartz products. Just do a quick web search on Hartz victims and you’ll find it.

After moving from San Deigo to West Virginia my dog developed a great love for a large yard along with a great problem with fleas. He never had a single flea in the 2 yrs we lived in San Diego, so I wasnt for sure which brands to try.
I bought the Hartz dip b/c I thought it might work better than the flea collars & sprays & drops I have previously tried. Now mind you I have a Mastiff not a cat, so I did not have the skin issues as the previous reviewer. I used the entire bottle in the apporpriate amount of water.
It worked immediately I could see the dead fleas in the tub, however it gave little more than a few days relief from the fleas.
I am pretty much at my wits end between trying personal decontamination & home foggers & yard (I have mroe than 2 acres of land.
Now I am just waiting for winter & hoping the fleas will go away naturally.
Again, my dog did not have the skin issues that the cat did, but he also is 120 lbs, and this product only gave a few days protection.
I will look elsewhere

I sleep on an air mattress on a hardwood floor coated with polyurethane and after waking up in the mornings with red welts all over my arms and legs, I had had it. The only reason I bought this product was because it was the only flea chemical available at my local grocery store and despite not using it as directed, this spray has worked excellently for me. I use it to treat the room, and not the dog – in fact, there is no dog, just three of my roommate’s cats which aren’t allowed in my room. First I found a flea and doused it in a rainstorm to see how it would react, and the flea sputtered and died within 10 seconds. From there I treated the “hot spots;” where I usually sit or sleep or long periods of time and noticed an immediate improvement. The chemical dried, leaving white residue but it came away with a wet paper towel. Before I went to bed I squirted a protective ring around my mattress, and even onto the mattress itself. This helped. For awhile I soaked a pair of socks in it and then wore the socks to bed, and that managed to keep the fleas away without any noticeable effect on my skin. It’s been about two weeks now since I started spraying the floor and my mattress with it, and the fleas aren’t completely gone yet – I expect the eggs will continue to hatch for awhile, but I no longer wear the socks and as soon as I see one, I spray it. The problem has come under control. My only precaution would be to people in a situation like mine is since the spray is explicitly intended for dogs, I would be careful exposing any other animals to the chemical. Also, if my hardwood floor weren’t coated in polyurethane, I would worry about the chemical effects on the wood and I have no idea what it would do to carpeting. But for me – great stuff, I’ll probably go out and buy a refill.

After having a pet sitter watch my 14 year old Golden Retriever for a week, I came home to find her infested with fleas. By the time I realized that these little critters were all over my dog it was too late to bathe her. So I ran to Wal-Mart bought Hartz UltraGuard Plus Flea and Tick Spray, Hartz Flea Shampoo with Aloe, and Hartz Flea and Tick 3 month drop supply. As soon as I got home I read the directions and began spraying away hoping to make a dent in their population before bathing her the following day. The directions state that if you have a dog with long hair you need to “ruffle” the hair and make sure that the product touches the skin. As I was doing this I noticed that all of her hair was falling out in clumps and sticking to my fingernails. My hands were covered in her fur and I couldn’t see the end of my fingers through the mass of fur stuck to my nails. I figured it was just because the spray was wet, however, when I finally washed my hands, I realized that all my nailpolish was gone. It had taken my nailpolish off and had bonded the hair to my sticky nails. I panicked and bathed her quickly knowing that it must be burning the crap out of her skin! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

Thousands of injuries and deaths have been reported to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the regulatory agency that has oversight over these topical spot-on pesticide products. The EPA issued a Cancellation Order in 2005 on Hartz’s cat and kitten products, which contained precisely the same ingredients in exactly the same volumes as their current dog/puppy products. The EPA is currently considering action on Hartz’s cat and dog products because thousands of incidents have been reported as a result of Hartz and other manufacturer’s that use topical spot-on products containing neurotoxins pesticide ingredients. Over 44,000 adverse incidents were reported to the EPA in 2008, that’s up from over 28,000 the previous year–astounding numbers reflecting a terrible safety record. Please use safer alternatives. They are available. Speak with your vet. He or she can give you much safer recommendations than Hartz or Vectra or Vectra 3D (made by Hartz’s sister company and recently sold by vets–avoid it!). Their products have been Cancelled (terminated) by the EPA (2005 Cancellation Order) for unacceptable health risks to cats and kittens and their dog flea and tick products are among those currently being investigated today by the Environmental Protection Agency (see EPA Public Advisory, April 2009 and May 2009). i bought this for a little less than as i was looking for a good flea product for my dog who had gotten them. he hates sprays and those liquid flea products so i thought this would be good to try. first of all it STINKS. the closest thing i can compare the smell to is chlorine. it has such a strong odor that i had to spray the room with air freshener after using it. the smell was unpleasant to my dog as well. it is also very messy and if you have a dark colored dog like i do, you have to REALLY rub/brush it in good or it gives the coat a white color to it. its is also a rough powder…not a smooth powder like baby powder and when i treated his bed as per the instructions his bed felt grainy/sandy. what concerned me the most was that this powder, as i found out, has a very toxic chemical in it and can be dangerous if ingested. well as all dog owners know, dogs with fleas will lick and bite themselves. and also…it did NOTHING to kill the fleas. this product claims to kill fleas, flea eggs and larvae within 12 hours. it did not help at all. because of this, along with the horrible smell and toxic chemical, i am no longer using this product, will not use it in the future, and do not recommend it.

I just moved to Mississippi and my 3 New York Chihuahua had never know what a tick was. Obviously these Mississippi Ticks didn’t know what a New York Chihuahua was because they all wanted a taste of them.
I was plucking 2-3 a day off my little guys. I did treat the yard with a bag of bug granules from Lowes. I only treated near the house since I didn’t want any ticks on me. I didn’t treat the rest of the 20 acres where the dogs often go exploring. I placed these collars on them and for 60 days not one tick or flea. Not even a bite. The collars actually have a pleasant smell. After 60 days free of ticks I did spot 2 ticks total in the span of the next few weeks. These are advertised a 6 month collars. I’m sure they would reduce infestation for 6 months but not 100%. So I decided for the collar had served its purpose and placed fresh ones. Some might need a stronger collar but for my 5-10lb Chihuahuas these worked well.

I just called the EPA in on this company. do not buy their products or any flea product that conntains the chemicals Pyrethrins It’s the same chemical that in in RAID!!! YES and the enviromantal deparment told me so. This company and several others puts this product on our shelves and some pets react violently to it. My Bulldog was sick for almost 24 hours. Please be extremely careful. Hartz Mountain has a deplorable safety record over the years. Please do a little research–over the counter spot-on’s are receiving new scrutiny by the Environmental Protection Agency (May 2009 Public Advisory) because of the tremendous increase in reported adverse incidents (over 44,000 in 2008, up from over 28,000 in 2007). Hartz Mountain has one of the worst safety records in the industry. The EPA issued a Cancellation Order on Hartz’s cat and kitten products in 2005, terminating their distribution. Hartz’s dog and puppy product contains exactly the same pesticide ingredients in precisely the same volumes, but the EPA, while concerned, has not yet terminated the dog product. Hopefully that will happen soon. Please be careful. Our own experience with their product was tragic. Thousands of pets have been injured and killed–please consult your veterinarian.

I bought this along with another brands flea collar for another pet.
As with the other,this did not get rid of fleas.It didn’t even lessen the amount.
I ended up purchasing Frontline product and that has worked greatly.
I will likely never purchase a flea collar again.
