Reading all the negative reviews about this product made me hesitate before buying it, but it had been recommended by our excellent vet, by our local family-owned organic pet store, and by a pet journalist who always suggests great, natural products, so I went ahead. I’d always had issues with Advantage and Frontline, which, besides being toxic, systematically caused my cats to itch, hurt, and groom excessively — swallowing the pesticides in the process.
I have applied Sentry Natural Defense carefully to both my cats, and they seem fine with it: they didn’t react when I applied it, didn’t run away, behaved as normal, and haven’t been licking or itching. Their skin looks fine, unlike with the other products. No hair loss either.
The only negative I can think of is that the product is very liquid, poorly packaged, and difficult to apply precisely, thus leaving a large patch of oily fur, but I wiped out the excess with a tissue, and brushed the cats after a few hours, which returned their fur to normal. No damage to fabric or furniture.
I can’t say whether the product actually works since my cats are mostly indoors, and I apply the flea-repellent as a preemptive measure, but so far so good — no fleas nor ticks.
Some reviewers complained about the smell, but I actually like its citrus/cinammon, pot-pourri fragrance — perhaps because I already use essential oils in the house for cleaning and refreshing. My cats seem to like it too, as they smelled the tissue I used to wipe out the excess product with intense curiosity, and didn’t run away from it.
Some people also claim that essentail oils are not good for cats: they’re not ideal, but compared to pesticide-based products, they’re a safer alternative.

This product is crap and should not be used ever – jivasol –
I too am now on the “bad mommy” list with my two loveable and trusting cats. I wish I would have done more research first:(. The younger cat does not seen greatly affected but my older cat has severly irriated skin. Using this product on any animal is cruel. I would compare it to a human receiving a chemical burn or severe sunburn. I haved washed them both twice now(24 hours, then again total 48 hours after applying) and it seems to have lessened the tenderness. I suggest using a baking soda bath with cool water, as baking soda is good for burns.

“If ingested, the peppermint plant and its oil could indeed potentially cause harm to your cat. Cats are especially sensitive to peppermint oil, and effects such as gastrointestinal upset, central nervous system depression and even liver damage could occur if ingested in significant quantities. Some peppermint oil formulations also contain aspirin derivatives, which could result in additional toxicity. Furthermore, if inhalation of the volatile oil were to occur, aspiration pneumonia may be possible. Based on this, we would not recommend using peppermint leaves or oil in areas where your cat is allowed access.”
My guess is you put this junk on your cat and now it’s freaking out and you’re wondering anyone else has had the same experience. Yes, this product is AWFUL. DO NOT USE IT.
No, I am not some hyper-sensitive pet owner. Yes, I do realize that anything you use to kill fleas probably has some potential for side effects. I am not talking some minor irritation. I am simply floored that the manufacturer could be this stupid to put something like this on the market.
Flea medicine – Horse –
I read many negative reviews on this, so I had to give my thoughts. It may have a strong odor, and might not be as effective as the chemical repellents, but I feel much better about putting this on my cats as opposed to the toxic chemicals that the vet wants to sell me. It’s safer for me, my cats, and the environment.
